Located in the southeastern part of the state of Florida, Fort Lauderdale is a tourist destination with many attractions, ideal to start your cruise tour to the Caribbean. Also called the Venice of America, the city has many advantages.
The main assets of the city
One of the main advantages of this city is its openness to the Caribbean, which makes it a privileged departure point for many cruises. Fort Lauderdale is also less than an hour’s drive from Miami, with its incredible beaches, Latino atmosphere and famous parties. However, you don’t have to go outside the city. Many tourist sites are to be seen on the spot, we give you a non-exhaustive list below.
The canals of Fort Lauderdale
The city is distinguished from others by its many waterways, which are over 400 kilometers long. These canals were designed at the beginning of the 20th century to drain the original swamps and to allow urban development.
The canals are traffic lanes used by water buses, with which you can tour the city. You can admire the beautiful houses and their yachts. In fact, for a population of just 165,000, Fort Lauderdale has nearly 50,000 boats anchored in the 100 or so available ports.
The Bonnet House
The Bonnet House is one of the city’s historic houses, built entirely of coral and which houses a unique collection of post-impressionist paintings. It is surrounded by a magnificent park of 14 hectares.
A greenhouse with orchids and very original sculptures are also part of the tourist assets of this site. Guided tours are constantly organized by the volunteers of the local association.
The strip
This long avenue by the sea is located between Las Olas and Sunrise Boulevards. It is known for its cafes, hotels and restaurants that are very popular with tourists because of its proximity to the city’s beautiful beaches.
The Bonnet House is located near the strip where you can also visit the International Swimming Hall of Fame, a swimming complex where high-level competitions are held that also includes a museum dedicated to the sport dear to Michael Phelps.
The nightlife of Fort Lauderdale
A mecca for Florida nightlife, the city will allow you to enjoy various festivities and other endless parties.
We recommend the Blue Martini, which is one of the most popular places for the local youth. This lounge bar chain is located throughout Florida with a trendy style and atmosphere perfect for those of you who need to let loose until the end of the night.
The Smoke Café is, on the other hand, conducive to wine lovers. With its cozy atmosphere, this wine cellar presents many varieties of various origins as well as excellent cigars from Cuba.
